How I became interested in museum work

I have always liked history. While working for "MA BELL" I started volunteering at Fort Vancouver National Historic Site in Vancouver, Washington. At the time I was also completing my undergraduate work in History at PSU in Portland, Oregon. After the break up of the "Bell System," I landed a position as the Executive Director of a museum in eastern Oregon. Since 1995, I have basically been associated with musuems, non-profit organizations and education. I presently work as a Museum Specialist for the federal government.

A few suggestions for those who are interested in working in a museum:

1) Take courses in grantwriting, art, public relations and other classes that applies to museums.

2) Start building your experience and gaining knowledge on the various aspects of museum work.

3) Network with museums, art centers, living history centers, libraries, etc. and build a network of quality and professional associates who will agree to be your reference and answer questions you have.

4) Alas! Remember to volunteer! Then volunteer, and when you get have the opportunity keep volunteering. Volunteer work will open many doors into the museum field by those you associate with that may land you a position in the the museum field.

Museum work is fun and exciting work!
